The Alberta Lamb Traceability Pilot Project is evaluating electronic technology systems to find the costs and benefits of implementing this new technology. The goal is to identify systems that meet the needs of industry and government for traceability as well as offer opportunities to improve profitability across the lamb supply chain.
Project objectives
- To develop a broad industry understanding of the benefits and limitations of electronic equipment and systems.
- To meet the requirements of food supply chain traceability internationally, nationally and provincially.
- To develop electronic options to enable compliance with traceability requirements of: premises identification, animal identification, and animal/product movement
- To encourage the use of new technology across the lamb supply chain.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and technology can provide improved management tools as well as preparing the industry for traceability. The RFID factsheet series will help producers take maximum advantage of these opportunities.
