Iceberg diseases - infectious diseases that keep adult sheep from performing as they should with Dr. Paula Menzies
Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 7pm
Presentation is 45min, with a 15 min Q & A
We expect that a ewe or ram, at 3 to 5 years of age, should perform at its peak potential. However, a number of common infectious diseases can rob that animal of its health. Many of these diseases are acquired early in life - some as nursing lambs, but don't manifest until the sheep reach adulthood. Also typical of these diseases are that a) many more animals are infected in the flock than appear clinically ill, hence the term "iceberg disease"; b) many infected animals that appear normal may suffer from sub-clinical illness or poorer productivity; c) these diseases can be purchased unknowingly when bringing in replacement youngstock. This presentation will provide producers with a list and description of these diseases that are common in Canada and provide more in-depth information on maedi visna (also known as ovine progressive pneumonia), and Johne's disease (also known as ovine paratuberculosis).
